While two thirds dream of it, a tiny minority of people actually take early retirement, due to lack of means, but also lack of preparation, reveals a survey by the Raiffeisen bank published Thursday.

This gap between desire and reality is notably due to a lack of understanding of the mechanisms of foresight, which slows things down considerably, the Raiffeisen study shows. There are indeed few people who really prepare for their retirement, because the subject puts off more than one person. In reality, less than 20% of working people are concerned about it, and these are mainly men (read framed). Result: at 60, one in two people have no idea of the income they will have in retirement.

However, having the luxury of stopping before the reference age, as two thirds of respondents wish, requires good planning. “It is with long-term savings, which bear interest, that we manage to build up the necessary capital to then be able to live off it,” explained the LPP expert in professional pensions on Friday in La Matinale de la RTS. at Prevanto Michèle Mottu Stella.

“Concretely, to have a pension of 2,000 francs from the age of 60, you would need to have a capital of around 530,000 francs, roughly. Whereas at 65, for the same monthly pension, you need a Smaller capital, approximately 470,000 francs You must therefore have saved more quickly and more intensively to retire early,” calculates the specialist.

This is all the more true since it is in the last years of working life that we accumulate the most money in our pension fund. In addition, as the amounts from the 1st and 2nd pillar are not necessarily enough to live on, it is still necessary to supplement with a good dose of additional savings.

Moral: the earlier you become interested in your retirement, the better. the ideal is to start at the age of 40, advises Michèle Mottu Stella.
