Electricity consumption at Senegalparticularly by public administrations, has become a major concern for the authorities. In 2023, the electricity bill of administrations reached 71.6 billion FCFAaccording to Cheikh NianeSecretary General of the Ministry of Energy. This figure, revealed during a workshop on energy saving in Dakar, shows an alarming rise in national electricity consumption with an increase of 583 GWh between 2022 and 2023.

The objective of the workshop is to train Directors of General Administration and Equipment (DAGE) to strategies for reducing the public electricity bill and energy optimization in administrations. According to Mr. Niane, the national energy saving potential in the electricity sub-sector could reach 36%. A significant saving which, if achieved, could reduce the financial burden on the state budget while reducing carbon emissions.

Among the measures mentioned to reverse the trend, the adoption of new technologies and the acceleration of energy efficiency programs are at the heart of the priorities. By investing in more economical infrastructure and raising awareness about the responsible use of energy, Senegal aims to rationalize its electricity consumption in public sectors, while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Optimizing electricity consumption is now a strategic issue, with potential impacts not only on public finances, but also on the overall economic development of the country. In a context of energy transition, controlling this bill is crucial to guarantee a stable and sustainable supply of electricity for future generations.

In conclusion, the authorities’ desire to reduce the energy bill in Senegal requires sustained efforts from all stakeholders, in particular public administrations, to rationalize the use of electricity. The promotion of energy efficiency is shaping up to be a national priority in the face of current challenges of overconsumption and sustainability.
