Unmissable place of the Parisian art sceneoffering us each year always extremely interesting exhibitions, the Museum of Romantic Life unfortunately closed the last Monday September 16. In question, very important renovation work to bring the old house up to standard (and up to date)Ary SchefferFranco-Dutch painter and great friend of George Sand. And these should last for more than a year and a half.
A much-anticipated renovation
Absolutely unique place in the heart of historic district of New Athensthe Museum of Romantic Life is distinguished by its architecture and its breathtaking setting. Former residence of the painter Ary Schefferthe pavilion and the two workshops had been transformed into a museum in 1983first as an annex to the Carnavalet museum, then as Museum of Romantic Life in 1987. For this, a lot of work had been undertaken in the early 80sto make the place accessible to the public.
However, since then, it has only been the subject of some minimal renovationssuch as the installation of a better conservation system in the two workshops. For the safety of the public and the works, it was therefore more than necessary to make some changesin particular to solidify the structure of the building, its glass roofs and joinerywhile retaining the original charm. The interior of the main pavilion should also be reviewed, to offer a new journey among the permanent collections (free!).
A treasure of Parisian life
These are therefore quite important work which began at the end of September, and which should continue until month of March 2026. A hell of a project, the total cost of which should amount to 3.8 million euros. And if, like us, you are a little in love with this placeknow that you can take part in the project, since a participatory prize pool was set up by the Town Hall of the 9th arrondissement. The opportunity to contribute, each at their own level, to the history of Paris.
Luckily for us, the City of Light is full of other institutions and fabulous exhibitions to discover while waiting for the Museum of Romantic Life – classified as a Historic Monument since 1956 – to get a makeover. We can’t wait to be able to do it again tread the ground of the workshops which saw (among others) George Sand, Eugene Delacroix or even Frédéric Chopin. See you in 18 months!
