A child and his grandparents lost their lives Monday evening after accidentally finding themselves in the heart of a police chase in Ontario.

It all started shortly before 8 p.m. when an off-duty police officer reported a burglary at a Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) branch in Clarington.

Officers from the Durham Regional Police Service quickly found a suspicious vehicle – a U-Haul van – which was “driving erratically,” Monica Hudon, spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit, said in a statement ( UES).

After following the vehicle for several streets, it took Highway 401 in the opposite direction and caused an accident involving at least six vehicles.

“An occupant of the van was pronounced dead at the scene. Three people – a 60-year-old, a 55-year-old and an infant – were also pronounced dead at the scene. Another person was transported to hospital for treatment of serious injuries,” said the SIU spokesperson.

The two adults who died are believed to be the child’s grandparents, Global News reported.

An investigation has been opened by the SIU, the government agency responsible for investigating the conduct of Ontario public servants.

“Five investigators, a forensic investigator and an investigator responsible for reconstructing collisions were assigned to the case,” said Ms. Hudon.
