From Tuesday May 14 to Saturday May 25, 2024, the Croisette will once again be adorned with sequins and a red carpet to welcome the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. On the sidelines of the festivities, the France Télévisions group will broadcast the opening and closing ceremonies.

Throughout the Cannes Film Festival, and on their site from May 9, the public service channels will also offer a selection of films that have marked this meeting place for fans of the seventh art in previous editions.

Two collections of notable films broadcast by France Télévisions

Two collections will be in the spotlight, starting with the one dedicated to several Golden palms awarded for several decades.

Certain award-winning films will therefore be broadcast, such as Sex, lies and video by Steven Soderbergh (1989), Me, Daniel Blake by Ken Loach (2016) or even A family matter by Hirokazu Kore-eda (2018).

The second collection, called “Rise of the steps”, will be dedicated to films that have left their mark on cinemas and feature prestigious castings. Works like Native by Rachid Bouchareb (2006), Cosmopolis by David Cronenberg (2012) or Patersun by Jim Jarmusch (2016) will thus be offered to the eye of viewers.

Xavier Dolan and Greta Gerwig in the spotlight

This special program will also be an opportunity to highlight the careers of cinema personalities by broadcasting their films. Xavier Dolan, president of the Un Certain Regard category this year and Greta Gerwig, director of the film barbie and youngest president of the jury since 1966, will be saluted on France Télévisions channels throughout the month of May.

In this 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, 22 films will be in competition. They will be decided by a jury formed by Omar Sy, Eva Green, Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Pierfrancesco Favino (The traitor), the Japanese director Hirokazy-eda, the Spanish filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona (The Snow Circle), the Lebanese director Nadine Labaki and the Turkish screenwriter and photographer Ebru Ceylan.

On May 14, the opening ceremony will be presented by Camille Cottin, followed by the screening of Quentin Dupieux’s latest film, The Second Actwith Léa Seydoux, Vincent Lindon, Louis Garrel, Raphaël Quenard and Manuel Guillot.
