In the front row of the courtroom of the criminal court of Caen (Calvados)this Tuesday April 30, 2024, the two young girls hug their mother. In the defendant’s box, their father Damien* appears for hit themtwo days earlier, at his home inHérouvillettea few kilometers east of Caen.

When he drinks, he attacks his daughters

Aged 10 and 13, the two girls were present at their father’s house for the holidays. Since their parents separated five years ago, they lived alternately at their mother’s and Damien’s, every other week. But, for some time now, the eldest has only agreed to go to Hérouvillette every other weekend. The reason ? Damien drinks and, when he is drunk he attacks her. First verbally, but also physically.

This is what happened this Sunday, around 6:25 p.m. The 43-year-old mechanic reportedly drank “several beers” in the morning. At lunchtime, he would have been even more drunk, so much so that the two girls would have gone to their rooms, as they do in such cases. Enough to annoy Damien, who would then copiously insulted his eldest daughter, before grabbing the youngest by the leg and neck. It was the eldest, who took refuge in the bathroom, who informed the police.

At the hearing, as during his custody, Damien admitted the facts.

Everything is true. I’m taking care of myself, but that day I slipped. I want to try to regain my daughters’ trust little by little.

The accused, at the hearing

Faced with long-standing alcohol problems, he began treatment in February 2024, after a conviction for violence against his new partner. That day, he ordered his dog to attack the police who came to question him.

Despite a contact ban, his partner was present at Damien’s house on Sunday April 28. Wanting to intervene in the argument between the father and his daughters, she also received a blow.

“A man who fights with his demons”

The prosecutor underlined the “agencies of Damien’s addiction”, 20 years old. He also echoed the sentiment expressed by the two little girls and their mother, at the bar: “He did not make the necessary efforts to take care of himself.” The prosecution requested immediate incarceration for a total of 20 months, to which must be added eight months with a probationary suspension of two years.

Damien’s lawyer, Me Revel, described a man who “try as best he can to fight with his demons”, who would “not have the codes to communicate with his daughters”. In his pleading, he asked the court “not to desocialize” him further by sending him behind bars.

On semi-liberty

The court finally decided to sentence Damien to a sentence of ten months in prison for these facts. The judges also revoked the previous two-month stay. The forty-year-old will therefore have to serve one year in prison in total. He will be able to do this under the regime of semi-liberty, in order to be able to continue working. He will have to return to the detention center every evening. Damien will also have to treat his alcohol problems and pay 1,500 euros to each of his two daughters, for their moral damage. Furthermore, the court gave him withdrawn parental authority.
