A plaque thanking Geneva health personnel for their management of the COVID-19 pandemic: this is the gift offered by the Geneva Consular Corps. A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place this morning.

No more applause from caregivers on the balcony: today, the thanks are engraved in stone. An epigraphic plaque was inaugurated this morning at the Parc des Chaumettes, next to the HUG. She evokes thanks to the authorities and healthcare staff in Geneva in their management of the COVID-19 pandemic, as Frédérique Perler explains: “To remember, to remember and to thank, to express all the gratitude towards the university hospitals of Geneva during this period. They had to organize, reorganize, demonstrate a lot of resilience and inventiveness to treat the entire population who were suffering from this virus.

International recognition

Offered by the Consular Corps of Geneva, this plaque symbolizes joint efforts and a certain international recognition. Bertrand Levrat, director of HUG, underlines this point: “HUG has welcomed 12,000 Covid patients. Of the 12,000, several hundred had a nationality other than Swiss. This is what this recognition represents today. It’s important to represent the 13,000 HUG employees because they are the ones we need to thank.”

The plaque was signed by the general and honorary consuls stationed in Geneva between 2020 and 2022.

The long Covid: the forgotten part of the pandemic

For others, this inauguration marks the first step in recognizing a problem resulting from the pandemic, that of long Covid: “The pandemic is not over. Now it affects people who have long covid. This is a first step for the recognition of healthcare workers during the pandemic.”

With this inscription, part of recent history is now exhibited at the Parc des Chaumettes.
