Your most beautiful market

On the banks of the Creuse, Argenton reveals itself. In the streets, houses with wooden galleries stretch out above the river. In the background, old mills and former laundries where shirts were mass-produced illustrate the past. All around the Bonne Dame esplanade, the green hills of the Creuse valley spread out into the countryside. Located in the south of the Indre department, on the borders of Berry and Limousin, Argenton-sur-Creuse is at the crossroads between Paris, Toulouse, La Rochelle and Lyon. The site shelters traces and remains of the ancient city, an essential stopover for trade in Roman Gaul.

The Argenton-sur-Creuse market in detail

Since 1965, the Argenton market has enlivened the covered market located at Impasse de Villiers. To get there, there are two entrances: Place Carnot and Parc de Scévole where a few producers, mostly organic, are overflowing. Every Saturday morning between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m., around fifty food exhibitors enliven the heart of this town of around 5,000 inhabitants. On the stalls, cheese and wines from Valençay, fish from Brenne, green lentils from Berry and traditional Issoudun marzipan (a kind of marzipan with orange blossom).

The Argenton-sur-Creuse market, selected in partnership with La Nouvelle République du Centre-Ouest, is in the running for the election for the Most Beautiful Market in France: click here to vote.
