Officially, there was total serenity within the government. “If we stopped living every time a deadline like that of the rating agencies presented itself to us, we would have a big problem,” confided someone very close to Emmanuel Macron before the fall, Friday evening, of verdict from the Fitch and Moody’s agencies. This displayed confidence masked real concern, particularly for the European campaign. “It’s a subject that we cannot ignore and which will come back,” warned an executive from the Hayer team. The majority can breathe… a little. Neither agency ultimately downgraded ’s rating. The subject was not too controversial for the Fitch agency, since it had already lowered it a notch almost a year ago to the day. Fears were a little more acute regarding its counterpart Moody’s, but the agency is keeping France’s sovereign rating unchanged.
