The call to emergency services to report the blaze was made at 3:56 a.m. Friday morning. The Lévis City Police Department (SPVL) arrived on the scene a few moments after the firefighters, indicates Jean-Sébastien Levan, spokesperson for the SPVL.

“The fire broke out on the third floor, at one point two people were evacuated with serious injuries and were transported to hospital,” said Mr. Levan.

The SPVL confirmed that a man in his 60s died following the fire. Another victim, a woman in the same age group, remains “in critical condition” in hospital.

The Police Department does not wish to comment on the exact location where the fire started.

“The report from the fire services will be given to us in a few moments, for our part the investigators and forensic identification technicians will go to the scene to try to find out more,” says Mr. Levan.

The investigators’ efforts will be able to determine whether it is an arson, he adds.
