Lhe Census 2021 was published this Thursday by Statbel, the Belgian statistical office, in order to take stock of the evolution of the Kingdom’s population by municipality, over 10 years.

Between the 2011 census and that of 2021, the Belgian population increased by 5.2%. Even if the Brussels-Capital Region is experiencing greater growth with 9% (1,219,970 inhabitants in 2021), compared to respectively 5.5% and 3.5% for the Flemish Region (6,653,062 inhabitants in 2021) and the Walloon region (3,648,206 inhabitants in 2021), an increase is therefore observed in all regions of the country.

The municipalities which recorded the largest increases are in the center and south of the country, first in the province of Luxembourg. Most of the municipalities in decline are located near borders and more particularly along the French border.

The ranking of the most populated municipalities in Belgium has not changed in 10 years. Antwerp (529,417) is in the lead, followed by Ghent (263,703), Charleroi (201,837), Liège (196,296) and the municipality of Brussels (186,916). The least populated remain Herstappe (78), Messines (1,051), Daverdisse (1,415), Herbeumont (1,653) and Martelange (1,963).

In the Brussels-Capital Region, the three municipalities which recorded the greatest demographic development between January 1, 2011 and January 1, 2021 are Evere with an increase of 18%, the municipality of Brussels with an increase of 14.5%. and Anderlecht with an increase of 13%. Saint-Josse-ten-Noode is the only municipality in decline (-0.9%).
