The 2024 Cinema and Society Festival, an Unmissable Event in Tulle

Every year, the association Around May 1st organizes the Cinema and Society Meetingsa festival that questions society through cinema. Since its creation in 2005, this unmissable event has been held in Tulle, Corrèze, with the aim of exploring various themes such as feminism, work, and historical memory. In 2024, the festival will take place from September 23-28 and will offer a rich and committed program on the theme of “The Media and the Manufacturing of Information”.

The Media and the Manufacturing of Information: A Current Theme

The choice of this theme has its roots in the very history of the press. Since the creation of The Gazette by Théophraste Renaudot in 1631, the press has established itself as a counter-power, nicknamed the 4th power. The quest for information, the speed of dissemination, and the conquest of public opinion are central issues that unfortunately remain very relevant today. Cinema has long staged these issues through journalism films, often called “newspaper movies”, particularly in the United States.

In a context where media concentration is intensifying and where the emergence of the internet has changed the rules of the game with fake news, the festival wishes to offer a space for reflection on these contemporary issues. It will also focus on whistleblowers, alternative media, and new forms of journalism that are emerging.

A Varied Program

The festival offers an eclectic program, mixing mainstream films, rare works, and documentaries. Among the star guests this year, the director Alix Delaporte will be present virtually to discuss her film Alive during the closing night. In addition, Anne-Sophie Noveldirector of the documentary The Media, the World and Me and a journalist herself, will come to share her vision of contemporary media. Nicole Fernandez Ferrerco-president of the Simone de Beauvoir Audiovisual Center, and Pina Vala specialist in German cinema, will also be there, providing varied insights on the subject.

Special Events

In addition to the screenings, several events will enrich the discussion around the media. September 24the former journalist Philippe Merlan will propose a gesticulated conference on the issue of the practice of journalism today and the relations between the media and power. This major event will be held in the Latreille room at 8:30 p.m. and will be open to everyone.

At the same time, an exhibition entitled Fake News Historydesigned by the National Library of , will be on display at the Tulle media library throughout the festival. This exhibition, accompanied by training for cultural professionals, will address the dangers of fake news and the challenges facing journalism in the digital age.

With a rich and diverse program, the Cinema and Society Meetings are a special time to debate, exchange, and reflect on the challenges of journalism and the media in our current society.
