This summer, for the first time in years, Ventoux (Vaucluse) was not affected by the flames, a success which owes much to the prevention put in place by the ecoguards.

These young environmental guardians travelled across the region, patrolled relentlessly and made aware a record number of visitors to fire risks and good practices to adopt.

“There are reliefs that we would like to repeat,” said Jacqueline Bouyac, president of the Mont-Ventoux Regional Natural Park, reports Le Dauphiné Libéré of the summer 2024 report.

7,600 hours of patrolling and 52,000 people made aware

With 52,000 people made awarethe 2024 class of eco-guards has achieved a real feat. “This is not luck, but rather proof that prevention pays off,” added Jacqueline Bouyac, stressing the importance of vigilance during the summer period.

The ecoguards have passed 7,600 hours of patrolling on the various natural sites of Ventoux. Among the areas covered, we find sensitive places such as the Pérégrine sector, the Demoiselles Coiffées and the surroundings of the Suzette market. Their missions were varied: monitoring risky behavior, informing tourists and reporting any violations.

Despite the absence of fire, 17 suspected fires were reported by the young forest ranger. The eco-guards also faced several incivilities: cigarette butts, fires lit in the evening and waste abandoned in nature. In total, 1,788 liters of waste were collected and 8 fly-tippings reported.

With such a positive assessment, the 5th promotion of eco-guards du Ventoux has proven that their commitment and vigilance are essential assets for the protection of this fragile environment.
