While the spectacle still arouses the curiosity of passers-by, caution must be exercised. From Wednesday 18 to Sunday 22 September 2024, the high tides are back in Seine-Maritime with a coefficient peak of 115 expected on Friday, in (Seine-Maritime).

In detail for the Ocean city:

  • Wednesday evening: coefficient 110;
  • Thursday afternoon: coefficient 113;
  • Friday morning: coefficient 115;
  • Friday afternoon: coefficient 114;
  • Saturday: coefficient 112;
  • Sunday: coefficient: 102

Call for caution

In a press release, the Maritime prefecture calls for great caution for “all users of the sea, and in particular those who will be fishing on foot or walking on the coastline subject to the tide. A few minutes can sometimes be enough to be isolated by the rising tide.”

During high tides, the waters rise more quickly “and the sea currents are stronger, creating an increased risk of isolation by the tide,” the prefecture specifies.

Recommendations

– Before any outing at sea or on the coast, check the weather, coefficients and tide times;
– Do not go out alone and inform your loved ones of the place and time of departure;
– Have a means of communication to alert sea rescue services (charged mobile phone placed in a waterproof pocket to contact 196, or via channel 16 on VHF);
– Stay close to a fallback point

It is not uncommon for people to stay trapped by the tide as is the case (very) frequently in Étretat. In 2020, a hiker was stuck by the tide, at nightfall, near Saint-Jouin-Bruneval.
