From former sports journalist to living tribute to Johnny Hallyday, Thierry Luthers tells us about his reconversion

The world of song is often the scene of astonishing transformations. Thierry Luthers, former sports journalist and TV presenter, is one of the figures who rewrote their destiny by following a devouring passion. Today, he is recognized for his tribute concerts to Johnny Hallyday, an adventure that began more than fifty years ago.

Thierry Luthers’ passion for Johnny Hallyday dates back to a specific date: December 9, 1966. That day, he attended a concert by the French rock legend, an experience that would profoundly mark his life.. “When I saw this guy on stage, I said to myself: this is not possible, this is extraordinary,” says Thierry. Since then, he had promised himself to see him every time he was in concert.

Since this love at first sight, he has continued to follow Johnny, attending more than 35 concerts over the years. “I would put the Stade de France in 98 above all else, it was absolutely fantastic. And on an emotional level, where it was really very hard emotionally, it was the Vieilles Canailles tour, a few months before his death at Palais 12 in Brussels.”he confides.

From spectator to showman

Turning his passion into a career, Thierry first played in an amateur band before professionalizing his performances. His show, “Thierry chante Johnny”, is a true ode to his idol, where he performs Johnny Hallyday’s greatest hits. “I sing with my guts. I pay tribute to my idol with nine professional musicians. So, we do things seriously, without taking ourselves seriously.”he specifies.

During his concerts, the former journalist shares fascinating anecdotes and stories about the singer’s life. “Actually, I have two shows that run in parallel. I have a show called “Thierry sings and tells Johnny” where I tell all the anecdotes about his life. I don’t really like to contextualize the story of a song. For example, “Les Portes du pénitencier”, written by Hugues Aufray, which, in the English version “House of the Rising Sun”, talks about a brothel in New Orleans”he specifies.

Thierry’s next show will take place on October 3 at the Auderghem Cultural Center, with his friend Michel as the opening act, who will perform songs by Michel Sardou.
