Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has escaped further prosecution in the UK after British prosecutors dropped charges of alleged sexual assault dating back to 1996 due to insufficient evidence to secure a conviction.

Harvey Weinstein benefits from the suspension of legal proceedings. The British prosecutor announced on Thursday, September 5, the abandonment of the sexual assault proceedings brought in the United Kingdom against the fallen Hollywood film producer.

No prospect of conviction

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said that after reviewing the evidence, “there is no longer a realistic prospect of conviction” in the case of alleged sexual assault of a woman in August 1996. “We have explained our decision to all parties,” said Frank Ferguson, head of the CPS’s special crime and counter-terrorism division.

In June 2022, the British prosecutor’s office gave the green light to the indictment of the American producer, whose crimes sparked the #MeToo movement in 2017, “for two counts of sexual assault”. “We will always encourage all potential victims of sexual assault to come forward and contact the police”, assuring that those responsible would be brought to justice. Harvey Weinstein, arrested in 2018, is being held for sexual assault and rape in the United States.
