The prestigious American Festival of independent cinema of Sundance opens Thursday in the heart of the Rockies of Utah, when Hollywood professionals are directly affected by devastating fires of Los Angeles.
Admittedly, Park City and Salt Lake City where will be scheduled until February 2, 88 films, representing 33 countries and territories, are more than 1,000 km from the Californian megapol.
But the fires that disfigure her since January 7 are in all minds and hearts. They even directly affected festival -goers and the disaster is sometimes indirectly mentioned in their films.
“Poignant stories of people fleeing their house”
The organizers of Sundance 2025 spoke with directors “who lost their house or were moved” before coming to UTAH despite everything, the director of the Eugene Hernandez festival told AFP. He heard a number of “poignant stories of people fleeing their house with hard drives under his arm” to save their films.
Thus, echoing with fires, the genre film “Didn’t Die” – on zombies having survived an apocalypse – was shot to the homes today destroyed by the director and the production, in Altadena. “We shot the film and a few days later […] We have lost our houses, ”blown the Indian and American director Meera Menon.
She and her co-series husband saw their place of life reduced in ashes, just like those of the producer and the editor. “All four, we have really lost everything […] Altadena, it was really our dream residences, ”said the director on the verge of tears.
“The spirit of resilience”
Sundance had unveiled an eclectic program before the fires, where Hollywood stars rub shoulders with promising young directors, not all Americans. The opening evening will honor the film “Jimpa” of the Australian Sophie Hyde.
A mother, played by the British star Olivia Colman, goes to Amsterdam with her non-binary child-who does not recognize herself in any kind-embodied by Aud Mason-Hyde, child of the director, to see her grandfather , played by John Lithgow.
A “intelligent and poignant” film, according to Vanity Fair magazine. Likewise for “rebuilding,” of the American Max Walker-Silverman, with the British Josh O’Connor who embodies a Ranch owner who loses everything … in a terrible fire. “An incredible film […] Based on the spirit of resilience, “said the programming director of Sundance Kim Yutani.
-A British film adapted from a novel
In the genre drama, on the borders of horror, will be presented as a world premiere “The Thing With Feathers”, a British film adapted from a novel in which Benedict Cumberbatch embodies the father of young sons, faced with the death of their wife and mother.
Another superstar, American singer and actress Jennifer Lopez will be for the first time at the festival with “Kiss of the Spider Woman” by Bill Condon, who took over a Broadway musical adapted from a novel from Argentinian Manuel Puig.
Amerindian actress Lily Gladstone, named to the 2024 Oscars for “Killers of the Flower Moon” by Martin Scorsese, will appear in “The Wedding Banquet”, remake of the romantic comedy “Boy of honor” of Ang Lee released in 1993. We will also see the rapper Star A $ AP Rocky and the television presenter Conan O’Brien in “If I Had Legs i’d kick you”.
Non -fictional documentaries
The already cult TV series “The Bear” will also be in the spotlight since its star Ayo Edebiri is playing, with John Malkovich, of the thriller “Opus” which tells the investigation of a young author on the disappearance of A legend of pop.
Sundance, they are also non -fictional documentaries. The former Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern should be in Utah to promote the film “Prime Minister”.
And two documentaries tackle war in the Gaza Strip, including “Coxistence, My Ass!” Who follows Israeli pacifist activist Noam Shuster Eliassi, who has become a stand-up actress criticizing the devastating military offensive in Palestinian territory.
“As a activist, I barely touched 20 people and with a viral video making fun of dictators, I touch 20 million,” she laughs with AFP, while saying to herself “stressed” about from the welcome of the film.
