He, like her, has a desire to write that is stronger than anything. He, like her, are fighting to one day see their passion recognized. But neither was born on the right side of history to achieve this. Martin Eden the sailor from Oakland, hero of Jack London’s novel as Edène, a young black woman, his theater double. It was Alice Zeniter who had the idea of adapting the novel on stage and transforming the hero into a heroine well anchored in the 21st century.
Under his pen, Edène works in the laundry of a slaughterhouse. She is surrounded by colleagues, all women, and only has eyes for Rose, from whom everything separates her: education, culture, social class. A piece carried by the energy of its performers.
Alice Zeniterthe director and Camille Léon-Fucienthe main actress, are the guests of On the arts bridge. Eden is to be seen at Montreuil Public Theater until January 26, 2025.
