Actress Sandrine Bonnaire is on tour to perform “L’Amante Anglaise” in a production by Jacques Osinsky. A play which talks about justice and investigation around a murder performed this January 14 at the Auditorium Theater in Poitiers. The actress agreed to visit our studios on this occasion.

This play, directed by Jacques Osinsky, is adapted from Marguerite Duras’ novel “The English Amante” published in 1967. The story is as follows: a woman kills her deaf and mute cousin, and cuts her body into pieces. The main performer of the piece is Sandrine Bonnaire, guest of our newspaper this Tuesday noon.
How could you describe this woman?
Sandrine Bonnaire : She is a woman who suffered inconsideration and that is what led her to this crime which was not premeditated. It’s an angry move to make oneself heard and to be considered a little. Her husband doesn’t really look at her, he puts her down all the time and that’s why she has this gesture towards the cousin who has lived with them for over 20 years.
The staging is very sober. How to convey emotions with this type of staging?
Sandrine Bonnaire : It is the text that carries everything. It is an absolutely magnificent text, both complex and yet simple to understand. It’s almost more a play about madness and love.

When you play in the provinces, how do you deal with the change of scenery and atmosphere?
Sandrine Bonnaire : You have to adapt to each theater. In Poitiers, it is a very modern theater, unlike the Atelier theater in Paris or Versailles where we also played. These are Italian-style theaters. We wondered what it would be like in a modern theater and in fact, it works very well and the Poitiers theater is fantastic with wonderful acoustics and a huge stage. We rehearsed yesterday and it feels good.
This play marks your return to the theater, how did you experience this return?
Sandrine Bonnaire : Terribly good. In the theater, you have incredible roles. All daring is permitted and roles like that of Claire in this play are found more in the theater than in the cinema since the principle of theater is the strength of a text whereas in cinema it is especially the image.
The tour of “L’Amante Anglaise” continues in Toulon on January 16, then returns to Paris at the Odéon theater at the end of February for 19 performances.
