Popular alternative rock band Jane’s Addiction have apologized to fans after an altercation broke out on stage during their concert in Boston on September 13. The incident led to the cancellation of their upcoming performance in Bridgeport, Connecticut, scheduled for September 15.

Argument during concert in Boston

The situation escalated when singer Perry Farrell shoved guitarist Dave Navarro before appearing to yell at him. The scene, which took place at Boston’s Leader Bank Pavilion, turned violent when Farrell attempted to punch Navarro, prompting another crew member to intervene and separate the two men.

The conflict occurred in the middle of a concert, forcing the musicians to end their performance prematurely. The next day, the band took to social media to apologize to their fans. On their Instagram account, Jane’s Addiction posted a message: “We would like to sincerely apologize to our fans for the events that took place last night. As a result, we are canceling tomorrow’s concert in Bridgeport. Refunds will be issued to the original point of purchase.”

No further information has been given regarding the continuation of the tour, initially scheduled to run until October 16.

Internal tensions at the root of the incident

The tension between the band members has actually been going on for some time, according to Perry Farrell’s wife Etty Lau Farrell. In an Instagram post on September 14, she explained that the altercation was not an isolated incident but the result of her husband’s “built-up frustrations.” She revealed that Perry Farrell suffers from persistent tinnitus and sore throats, which are exacerbated by the band’s loudness on stage.

Etty said Perry was irritated by the crowd in the front row complaining that he couldn’t hear his voice. This lack of communication reportedly led to an angry outburst when the band began playing the song “Ocean Size” before Farrell was ready. According to Etty, the singer found himself “screaming” rather than singing to make himself heard over the noise of the instruments.

She also claimed that during the altercation, bassist Eric Avery allegedly pinned Farrell down and punched him three times in the stomach, before being separated by a member of the technical team. Avery, meanwhile, allegedly went to apologize to the audience for the abrupt end to the concert.

A group at the crossroads

The Boston incident comes in the middle of a co-headlining tour with Love & Rockets, marking the first time in several years that the original Jane’s Addiction lineup has reunited on stage. Despite the return of Dave Navarro, who missed the 2022 and 2023 tours due to long-term COVID, internal tensions continue to weigh on the band’s future.

In a recent interview with Guitar World, bassist Eric Avery had also hinted that the future of the group remained uncertain: “I really don’t know if our group will still exist next year.”

Jane’s Addiction’s next concert is scheduled for September 18 in Toronto, but the rest of the tour is still uncertain. In the meantime, fans are waiting for more information regarding the stability of the band.
