10 reasons to see “Memoirs of a Snail”

In this animated plasticine film, a shy and uncomfortable young girl decides to open up to the world, inspired by the meeting of an eccentric octogenarian. A nugget of poetry and strong emotions highly recommended by the magazine I read to all our teenagers! We explain why.

For its singular heroine

Grace Purdel doesn’t have an easy life… After the death of her parents, she is sent to a foster family on the other side of Australia. Very shy and a little weird, she loves reading and collects snails.

For the lovely brother/sister relationship

At school, the students make fun of Grace. His true friend is Gilbert, his twin brother. Even apart, they write to each other a lot. The film highlights their strong bonds.

For his nice message

We prefer to warn, the story is sometimes sad. But it also shows how to escape from solitude and savor the little pleasures of life.

For its talented director

Filmmaker Adam Elliot was inspired by his mother: like Grace, she collected lots of things! He also put a little of himself in his heroine, who dreams of joining a film school…

For its unique style

You may have already seen Mary and MaxAdam Elliot’s other film? We clearly recognize his style here: plasticine characters and settings rich in detail.

For Pinky, a funny and whimsical old lady

The old lady will help Grace come out of her shell. With her extravagant clothes and her unfailing optimism, we love her!

For his technique

The film was made in stop motion. The characters and settings are photographed, then moved a few centimeters between each shot. Scrolling through photos quickly (24 per second!) gives the illusion of movement.

For his titanic work

Filming lasted more than eight months, Adam Elliot’s teams made 200 sets and had to take… 135,000 photos!

For his touching music

Imagined by an Australian classical music composer, the soundtrack highlights the emotions of the characters, and will get into your head…

For its pretty ending

We don’t want to spoil it for you, but know that we cried a lot, a lot at such a moving conclusion!
