In Luxembourg: Plomm, the museum that lets children’s imagination explode

Once through the pale blue door, you wind through a winding corridor with colorful walls, subtly speckled with little mischievous characters who take part in the odyssey. And, at the bend of a final curve, stands, haughty and intriguing, the Tree of Stories, full of cavities, labyrinths and richly decorated corners to explore on several floors.

“It’s a permanent exhibition that takes us into the story of three friends who planted somewhat magical seeds and created this tree. Children are free to explore its fantastic inhabitants, have their own experiences, identify with this tree, and tell their own stories by letting their imagination wander. Supervised, the visit lasts one hour,” explains Manon Eicher, director of the Plomm Museum.

A fantastic journey of exploring love

Located behind Wiltz station, the Plomm Museum, which covers 1700 m², including 500 m² of exhibition space, is intended for children aged 0 to 12. Inaugurated on April 26, 2024, it employs 18 people, and has already welcomed nearly 5,000 visitors. “It’s a unique concept in Luxembourg. Everything is designed for children, to the point that the child-parent relationship changes during the visit,” says Manon Eicher proudly. “The idea goes back ten years already. We are guided by the principle of “hands-on”, namely the practical experience given to children, who can touch everything, explore everything. This participatory aspect of children is the central element of our approach. Collaboration between children also has its place.”

In addition to the Story Tree, the museum is home to LOVE, a temporary exhibition planned for two years which invites children aged 4 and over on a fantastic journey exploring love in all its forms and facets. “It is an abstract world, full of symbolism, in which children can relive emotions linked to love and open themselves to new reflections on this universal theme, thanks to colors, sounds, lights.”

Reservation required

Alongside these two exhibitions, creative workshops are also scheduled. “We are going to launch them more intensively this year. There, children can really get their hands dirty. There is a screen printing workshop, where they can create postcards to send to the people they love, a workshop linked to the production of sounds on videos, a photo workshop, where children can create their compositions in connection with love, etc.,” says the director.

At the Plomm Museum, “everything is done on a guided tour, in a group. Most often, there are two supervising people, who unfold the common thread of the story. We do not offer self-guided tours. During the week, it is open for school groups, relay houses and nurseries, while Saturdays (from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) as well as Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays during school holidays are dedicated to private individuals,” says Manon. Eicher.

Reservation is required. For the Tree of Stories, the visit lasts one hour for a cost of 5 euros. The LOVE visit lasts 1h30 and costs 7 euros.
