Please note: her name is Juliana Grigoryan. This young soprano of Armenian origin replaced Sonya Yoncheva at short notice – declared unwell – at the New Year’s Concert of the Orchester de la Suisse Romande (OSR), Wednesday at the Victoria Hall in Geneva and Thursday at the Théâtre de Beaulieu in Lausanne . Arriving only Wednesday morning in Geneva to rehearse with conductor Jonathan Nott and the OSR, she managed to excite the audience who gave her a standing ovation in Geneva and who applauded her enthusiastically in Lausanne. Her round and voluptuous voice shone in a program featuring famous arias and duets from Italian opera alongside Russian tenor Dmitry Korchak.
The New Year’s Concert is a traditional event with a festive feel. Already in January 2023, French soprano Julie Fuchs withdrew to be replaced at the last minute by a young Italian soprano, Rosa Feola. The same scenario was repeated this year and, fortunately, the replacement was a success. With the Overture of the opera as a preamble Guillaume Tell by Rossini, Jonathan Nott and the OSR were able to create a theatrical atmosphere. The English conductor makes all the music stands in the orchestra ring, from the cellos and double basses – delicate for the first sequence – to the brass and percussion, passing through bucolic woodwinds in the sequence of the cows’ ranz.
