Like every year, Steam holds its own Awards, but like in 2023, not everyone agrees: the nomination of Black Myth Wukong in a category bothers some players.
Disappointment at the Steam Awards
The Steam Awards have spoken, and according to users of the Valve platformBlack Myth Wukong is the game with the best story of 2024. But that’s not everyone’s opinion. “I haven’t seen a single person talk about the script”comments for example a user on X (Twitter), sharing the Steam Awards reward. But, according to other players, “the history of the title is much deeper than we think”. This is not the only “controversy” of the event. On Reddit, players don’t understand how Metro Awakening could win the title of best VR game of the year.
-Black Myth Wukong, developed by the Chinese studio Game Science, is inspired by the novel The journey to the westa classic of local mythology which traces the story of the Monkey King. It is above all an action game, which obviously has a narrative framework, but this last point is rarely cited as a quality. In question, the lack of a clear link between the enemies of an area and the area itself, and an exploration where we sometimes wander around for a long time without understanding what we are doing there.
Coming back to the Steam Awards, Black Myth was in the running against other games that, according to some Steam users, deserved its placesuch as Stalker 2, Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PC, Mouthwashing (a PS1-style psychological horror narrative game), and Final Fantasy XVI. It should be noted, however, that these games are not free from flaws in terms of storytelling. According to the Steam reviews, Mouthwashing would have made a better contender for the title of the game with the best story.
An honorable performance
Either way, Black Myth Wukong can add another statuette to his list. It notably won the title of best action game of the year at the Game Awards 2024 and that of the People’s Choice. However, he missed out on the coveted Game of the Year award, awarded to Astro Bot.
