INTERVIEW – The richly illustrated work “Henri Verneuil. Storyteller” pays tribute to the career of this long-despised master of the seventh art. Asked by The FigaroPatrick Malakian is delighted that his father’s work is finally recognized.

He has filmed the greatest, from Jean-Paul Belmondo to Alain Delon, including Fernandel, Jean Gabin, Louis de Funès, Lino Ventura, Patrick Dewaere, Yves Montand, Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Michèle Morgan and Claudia Cardinale. The music from his films has remained in everyone’s heads, from the flamboyant music of Clan of the Sicilians, signed Ennio Morricone, to the melancholy catchphrase of Michel Magne for A monkey in winter (1962), adapted from the novel by Antoine Blondin.

Henri Verneuil (1920-2002) remains to this day the all-category champion of 20th century French popular cinema.e century. With his approximately 35 films, he is a privileged witness to fifty years of French cinema. A richly illustrated work, Henri Verneuil. Storytellerby Philippe Sichler and Laurent Benyayer, has just been published and retraces, film by film, the career of the man who was long described as « most American of French directors ».
