“You don’t have to be Picasso to mix love life and the life of an artist”

Julie Birmant, French comic book writer, in , December 12, 2024. DELPHINE BLAST FOR “THE WORLD”

Painting, like comics, is an unfair art. Some take the light, others remain in the shadows. Painters enter history when their muses are lost in oblivion. Readers wait in line for hours to get a cartoonist's autograph, only to become disillusioned when they discover that they have only met the screenwriter. What is the value of a kind word on the title page when you were hoping for a drawing?

The exhibition “Julie Birmant. The wild herbs”, in Angoulême, at the end of January, will undoubtedly not make it possible to repair all the injustices. But at least it will highlight the work of a screenwriter as talented as she is modest, Julie Birmant, 50 years old, winner of the René Goscinny prize for best screenwriter, in 2024, for the first volume of her trilogy on Dali, Before Gala (Dargaud, 2023). The poster for the event is drawn by his fellow illustrator, Clément Oubrerie, 58, co-author of the eight-volume series. Aya from Yopougon (Gallimard). It represents an immense woman, hair blowing in the wind, welcoming a tiny painter on her knee. “At the beginning, Clément had drawn this girl with her eyes closed, I pointed out to him that we did not understand that she was the heroine. He redrew it with his eyes open”says Julie Birmant, in mid-December 2024, when we meet her in Paris, in the Dargaud offices. She nevertheless assures that “Lesherbes Fales” is, in her mind, a “two-person exhibition, that of a woman and an artist”.
