Guillaume Canet spoke about his latest filming experience with his 13-year-old son, Marcel, in his film Ad Vitam.

The teenager shared a few scenes with his father in this feature film following the fight of a former GIGN agent to rescue his wife kidnapped by a criminal organization.

Questioned this weekend by 50′ Inside about young Marcel’s first steps in the cinema, Guillaume Canet said he remained cautious, with Marion Cotillard, regarding their son’s rise in show business at such a young age.

“We are monitoring it closely because we know that it is a bit young to start,” he explained, affirming however that these moments had been “terrific”. “(It was) extremely stressful but he really wanted it. From the moment he wants it, we are obliged to put our foot down. And I just as much preferred it to happen with me.”

Especially since Marcel’s parents, who have been dating since 2007, know better than anyone this environment where they have asserted themselves since the 1990s. A detail that Guillaume Canet sees as much as an advantage as a “disadvantage” for his son, who could be subject to “very strong expectations” from the public.

“It’s still a very difficult job, which requires you to often question yourself,” added Guillaume Canet. “There are times when we take buckets of shit, we can say that. It can be hard to take sometimes. And at the same time he is in a good school. He has parents who have their heads on their shoulders. We live like normal people so it’s the best school for him, I think.”

The filmmaker, however, remains open to another path for his son: “It’s not certain that he will want to do that either. There I think it amuses him but he will surely and perhaps want to do something else, and so much the better. Whatever he does, as long as he’s happy, that’s the main thing.”

Ad Vitam, directed by Rodolphe Lauga, is released on January 10 on Netflix.
