It’s all new, all fresh. The first edition of the Nursery, a unique project from the Rock School of Marmande, was held last November. And of the fifteen applications received, three stood out from the crowd: the metal group The Blackstorms, the raggae-leaning rapper Zigomatik, and the pop-folk singer Amber Covey.
The objective of this project? “Support local artists to professionalize”, as Sabrina Petitjean, project development manager at the Marmandaise music school, aims.
Three winners, three worlds
Guitar notes resonate in the hall of the Rock School. In one of the studios, the four musicians and singers of the group The Blackstorms rehearse one of their compositions. “This Nursery is a springboard for us. »
Enzo, Thomas, Minh Tam and Ly Lan are 20, 16, 17 and 15 years old respectively, and form a group with almost three years of longevity, with already eight compositions to their credit. They are “just a group of young people who like playing metal more than being metalheads”. But to move into the big leagues, they applied to the Nursery. “Having won this project will allow us to release an EP,” emphasizes Minh Tam. Alone, we felt that we could not go beyond what we had already done. »
Individualized support
For Ambre, the young singer who performs under the name Amber Covey, “it’s frustrating to be alone and limited”. There, “I will be able to suggest things, show my world a little more”. The winner insists: the support of the Rock School in her EP project and the rest of her journey reassures her.
The last winner, Zigomatik, aka Kristopher, is the oldest of the three. At 35 years old and originally from the Paris region, he has been practicing music for around twenty years, first in a group, then alone. With reggae, hip-hop and rap tendencies, he enjoys mixing tones in his lyrics committed to various causes. “I like to bring diversity, that way I get less bored. » Already the author of two albums, his plan is to learn how to manage his set himself, to gain autonomy. From his profession as an agricultural producer of aromatic plants to music, there is only one step. “Ultimately, I want to be able to live from my two passions, to find a balance. »
Sustainability of the project?
“This project is the logical continuation of what we do at the Rock School,” says Sabrina Petitjean. The support will be personalized according to each person’s profile with individual monitoring and collective time on copyright, Sacem. »
Aspirants had to attach an original composition to their application file. After a pre-selection of six artists, an interview made it possible to choose the three winners.
The organizing team, made up of Sabrina Petitjean, Sandrine Teveux, assistant secretary of the association, Romain Carrié, permanent facilitator, Mathieu Daugareil, educational referent, and Mathieu Joerger, president, is confident. “We hope to be able to perpetuate this project,” concludes Sabrina Petitjean.
