We predicted it at the start of the year, and it is clear that it has come true: the city of Niort has undertaken a series of major projects in 2024.
Port-Boinot has finally completed its transformation. The employer’s house and factory have been restored and transformed, the latter even being decorated with a fresco by the Portuguese artist Vhils. The urban operation, awarded with landscape victories, is therefore completed: only a few minor works remain along Boulevard Main. More than 17 million euros, in total, were invested in the transformation of this industrial wasteland.
On the station side, it’s almost the end too. Car traffic has been completely restored since Wednesday December 19. With the opening of rue de l’Industrie last February, the road work is completed and traffic is completely restored. All that is missing is the ground markings, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists. However, work continues on the forecourt and esplanade, which should be completed by mid-2025.
The hill in full upheaval. Whether on Place Denfert-Rochereau or on Rue du Maréchal-Leclerc, work has been launched on Saint-André Hill. Greening and reducing parking remain the municipality’s stated objectives. Delivery planned for 2026.
The town hall in its setting. The work on Place Martin-Bastard is finished, and the surrounding streets – de l’Abreuvoir, de la Préfecture or du Palais – have also been given a new lease of life. They are all reopened to traffic, but plantings will be carried out in the spring.
A Main Boulevard soon to be a garden. After an excavation campaign in 2023, Boulevard Main is in the midst of construction to become a “garden boulevard. » Planting trees, removing parking lots, improving gentle circulation are on the menu of this project.
Niortech is growing. Hidden behind fences, the Niortech site, avenue Bujault, next to La Brèche, is expanding. This project led by the Niortais urban community should increase the space dedicated to digital technology and higher education to 4,600 m². The project will last until the summer of 2026 and should deliver an exemplary package from an environmental point of view: sourced materials, extension on an urban wasteland, model insulation, etc.
Modernized colleges. Two Niort colleges, Philippe-de-Commynes and Gérard-Philipe, have started their work phase as part of the Colleges 2030 plan led by the departmental council. More than 25 million euros have been committed, aiming in particular to reduce the environmental footprint of establishments and improve reception conditions. Nearly three years of intervention are planned.
At Clou-Bouchet, the start of demolitions. The work to destroy several building blocks in Clou-Bouchet began in November. The objective of the social landlord Deux-Sèvres habitat: to modernize its rental stock while making room for future projects in the urban area. The residents of the 126 housing units had obviously been relocated.
Construction sites… and traffic jams
While the work began at Place Denfert-Rochereau and Rue du Maréchal-Leclerc during the summer of 2024, the start of the school year in September proved complicated for motorists. Avenue de Paris, the flow of cars, already affected by the work around the station, has seen those avoiding Saint-André hill added. Same fight for those who seek to break through the avenue du Maréchal-de-Lattre-de-Tassigny.
