UPDATE : At 5 p.m., traffic was back to normal on departmental road 900, between Perpignan and Claira. The intervention of the emergency services and the police had ended.
It is considered the “worst road” in the Pyrénées-Orientales by many motorists: the RD 900 was closed to traffic this Friday, December 27 in the middle of the afternoon, between Perpignan and Clairaafter an accident involving several vehicles.
A pileup between seven cars
According to the first elements collected by News Perpignan, no less than 7 cars were involved by this pileup which occurred just before the exit which leads to the Salanca shopping area. A particularly accident-prone sector, confirms the Pyrénées-Orientales gendarmerie group, mobilized on the scene.
Firefighters were also present on site. At least one minor injury was reported, according to the report communicated by SDIS 66. The road was closed to traffic in the Perpignan – Claira direction. the time of the intervention, and several kilometers of traffic jams were recorded.
At the beginning of the evening, the intervention ended and traffic was able to resume normally on the axis.
Almost daily accidents on this road
This accident is not the first and is undoubtedly not the last that the RD 900 will experience at this level. Several shocks per week are unfortunately recorded on this particularly dangerous axis. And for good reason, while the maximum authorized speed is 110km/h, the road leads to the Rivesaltes-Claira commercial area.
However, the insertion ramp is often stormed and saturated, which causes a sudden slowdown on the dual carriageway. Careless or distracted motorists thus cause numerous accidents.
And if two fixed radars have been installed for many years, a few kilometers apart, in the Claira-Perpignan direction, no speed control equipment is not currently planned in the other direction.
