Forget colored glass balls, wreathed holly branches and flickering candles. You won't find any at the Quartier Général Super Market. The Christmas market specializing in art and design opened its doors on Friday at the end of the day at the former slaughterhouses in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

This year, organizers received more than 150 applications. They have selected 80 creators who will exhibit their creations until Sunday. For those who were failed, all hope is not lost. The organizers are keeping their file under wraps for possibly a next edition.

“The choice was very difficult,” acknowledges Corina Weiss, the director of Quartier Général, praising the quality of the artists who applied. “We tried to choose something to please all tastes. We have jewelry designers, there are graphic designers, clothing designers (…) We tried to have a wide range of accessories to sell.”

In the future, Quartier Général should not increase the number of exhibitors. Not that there is a lack of space, the event has 1,000 square meters. It's more in terms of the number of pallets needed to create the stands that things get stuck.

Among the 80 artists and designers who await the public until Sunday 5 p.m. at the former slaughterhouses of La Chaux-de-Fonds, we note the presence of several international big names including Léna Gelsomino, Jean-Philippe Bonzon and Renaud Defrancesco.

The der or not

This 9e edition of Super Marché is a pivotal moment for the director of Quartier Général who will leave her position next spring. She is leaving, but she could in the future return to the old slaughterhouses for the end of year periods. The contemporary art center committee is in discussion with Corina Weiss. He would like to keep it at the head of the market. “It’s a very large organization that requires fairly specific organizational skills.”
