The theft of maple syrup which hit the headlines from the summer of 2012 left its mark on many minds. In Quebec, obviously, but also in the rest of Canada and the United States, where the unusual nature of the crime has aroused curiosity.
And there is reason: we are still talking about maple syrup, and not gold bars, which immediately gives a folkloric side to the affair. The scale of the theft also: 18 million, that's not nothing. And finally, the number of accused: 26 people will parade before the court during long legal proceedings, including a jury trial.
Remember that the subterfuge consisted of taking barrels of maple syrup out of the warehouse, then replacing them with water inside.
“In 16 years in the Major Crimes Bureau, I have made files, many of which have had an impact on my career. But this one is number one. “Everyone looked at it with a wink, maple syrup… but it's a crime, there are people who were wronged for 18 million dollars.”
— Luc Briand, retired investigator from the Sûreté du Québec
This ex-police officer as well as the prosecutor Julien Beauchamp-Laliberté, the former president of the Federation of Maple Producers Serge Beaulieu and the former journalist Yves Charlebois talk about what was most striking for them in this story.
To see Monday: the third capsule which will focus on the series itself, with the participation of actor Guillaume Cyr.
