During the holiday season, our department stores are in the spotlight. But ultimately, what is the history of department stores in France and around the world from 1850 to the 21st century? We are interested in this history through the exhibition The saga of department stores from 1850 to the present dayat the City of Architecture and Heritage.
As Christmas approaches, large crowds gather inside and outside department stores, in front of the windows which attract shoppers and tourists. These are 150 years of dazzling and functional architecture, both generating and witnessing the evolution of modes of consumption and major social, economic, artistic and cultural changes that are spreading across our daily landscape. But ultimately, what is the history of these major brands, true temples of consumption, born in the middle of the 19th century? Isabelle Marquette and Elvira Ferault, both curators of the exhibition, answer our questions.
Isabelle Marquette et Elvira Ferault are the guests of VMDN. The exhibition The department store saga from 1850 to the present can be discovered until April 6 in Paris, at the City of architecture and heritage.
