Born in Brazil, in the city of Belo Horizonte, he quickly developed a growing love for music until the day he sees Queen in concert. And there is the revelation, he will make music when he grows up. In 1984 Max was 15 and his brother Igor was 14 when their father died of a heart attack. They drop out of school and tell themselves that they only have one way to bring money home, make music. That same year, 1984, Max and his guitar, Igor with his drums, formed what would become Sepultura.
In 1985 a demo of theirs was released on a cassette copied in hundreds of copies and attracted the attention of small independent labels. And it was in 1987 with their album Schizophreniathey will sell copies and become the biggest sellers of thrash metal in Brazil. This score will attract the attention of the famous American label Roadrunner and Sepultura’s great international adventure begins.
In 1991 they played at the Rock in Rio festival in front of 100,000 people, perhaps the biggest performance by a trash band at the time. In they will release Chaos AD, an album very very very committed against racism, in favor of ecology, and all that mixed with their trash. The album was produced by Andy Wallace, producer of Nirvana in particular, and they went gold. This is the album Roots which will be released, one of the most influential albums in the history of this musical movement. Always committed, they denounce the genocide of the native Americans, they mix the music of the natives with their ever more extreme metal, you must listen to this album at all costs. They even reached 24th place on the American Billboard, a global success.
But this success will create dissension in the group and Max Cavalera will leave the group permanently. He will go and do a very productive second career by creating Soulfly. The first album, called Soulflystill as committed and very spiritual, will reach 32nd place on the Billboard and will be certified gold. In short, everything Max touches turns to gold. Soulfly will also be one of the spearheads of neo-metal.
