A writer who became famous. After obtaining the Goncourt prize in 2018 for Their children after thempublished by Editions Babel, Nicolas Mathieu, who lost his mother, is once again in the spotlight since his work was adapted for the cinema by Ludovic and Zoran Boukherma. This native of Épinal, who is the subject of all the questions about his private life, prefers to keep his daily love life to himself. If the press mentions a possible relationship with Charlotte Casiraghi, the daughter of Caroline of Monaco, Nicolas Mathieu had a child in 2013, named Oscar. Separated from his son's mother, the writer managed to remain on very good terms with the latter. But it is with great frankness that the author discusses this breakup and the consequences it may have had on his son's life: “It still bothers me. We screwed his family a bit, even if we managed to separate”he confided to our colleagues at Mondeone March 2023.
Nicolas Mathieu evokes his son Oscar's love of literature, also instilled by his former partner and mother of his child
But those who live far from Paris can also count on their son's curiosity and his love for literature to make him smile again. Indeed, Nicolas Mathieu, who experienced some very dark years, can boast of having passed on this passion to his child: “My son reads a bit of everything and he enjoys it. But, once again, I can't boast of having done this alone, it's also his mother who is responsible for this. I expect what he reads less as a teenager, but I think that these things remain engraved, and that they will resurface later”. Thus, it is also thanks to the mother of his son that Oscar was able to find pleasure in discovering the literary world.
And as a dad who is very close to his child, the writer, who has an astonishing vision of love, does not hesitate to throw out all the little recommendations that some love to give to parents. He prefers this way “don’t overly follow the advice that others give you, especially those who don’t have children”, he says in his interview for our colleagues at Monde. “Because education is not something easy. And the people who give advice don't understand what fatigue is. Roughly speaking, we are going to do what we can and the best we can, but without any assurance of the final result!” You will have understood, Nicolas Mathieu is a very fulfilled dad who prefers to trust his instinct rather than his more or less close entourage.
