Vaiana 2 has barely been released when there is already talk of a possible sequel. The reason is simple: a post-credits scene which is in line with Marvel's narrative strategies.
Released in 2016, Vaiana was a huge hit for Disney, grossing $643 million at the worldwide box office, and as it went along, you could almost say that Vaiana became the biggest hit in streaming history. It is therefore not surprising that Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is launching production of an animated sequel, and also a live remake with The Rock, also titled Vaiana. That said, said animated sequel has just arrived in French theaters, and it struggled to convince us.
Eight years after the first opus, Vaiana 2 exposes the fact that the eponymous heroine is now a central figure for her people. Still in the company of Maui, and a new crew, she is called by storyline necessities to explore what is beyond the known limits of the world. Along the way, she is confronted by the mysterious Matangi, and must face Nalo, the god of storms.
If the main story ends with a temporary victory, a post-credits scene carefully planted the seeds for a possible sequel.
When Moana tries to pull a stunt on Marvel
In this scene, we find Matangi confronted by Nalo, furious at having seen her plans foiled by Moana and Maui. Nalo, now physically incarnated for the first time, evokes his desire for revenge. This moment is reminiscent of the famous villain teasers in the Marvel franchises, with these initially indistinct silhouettes which gradually become clearer, like Thanos in the films. Avengers.
The tone of the scene is intended to be serious and threatening, marking a break with the light humor of the post-credits scene of the first film, where Tamatoa, the crab eager for treasure, offered a rather funny interlude. Here, Tamatoa also makes its big comeback, and a doubt arises as to a possible alliance between Tamatoa, Nalo and Matangi, for a possible Vaiana 3.
This scene leaves little doubt about Disney's intentions: a third opus is in the pipeline. The establishment of a powerful antagonist, an understanding between villains, and a desire for revenge aimed Vaiana seems to augur a darker tone for the rest of the heroine's journey. Furthermore, the scene gives a little more substance to Matangi by presenting her as a complex character, torn between the desire for loyalty and the need for survival.
That said, with this post-credits scene, Vaiana 2 is part of a narrative strategy that feels strongly reheated. We're not sure that the public really needs a Moana Cinematic Universe, or a pseudo Thanos. It will also be noted that like the Nemesis of AvengersNalo also appears in the heart of a huge purple cloud. Is this a coincidence or an homage? The answer lies with Disney's power brokers.
Vaiana 2 has been available in French cinemas since November 27, 2024.
