Serena Williams has denied lightening her skin following controversy last month when she shared a video of herself and her family.
A scathing response. Accused of intentionally altering her complexion after sharing a video of herself at a school event with her husband Alexis Ohanian and their two daughters, the tennis champion responded to the allegations during an Instagram live, Monday, December 2 . While doing a makeup tutorial for her brand 'Wyn Beauty', the former athlete said: 'I usually start a third time and use a neutral color that suits my skin tone. And for the haters: no, I don’t bleach my skin.”
“There is a thing called sunlight, and depending on that sunlight you get different colors,” she added. She then explained that she was wearing “stage makeup,” since she was volunteering for her daughter's play, in the video that went viral in late November. Outraged by the accusations, she said: “Yes, I'm calling you out on this because it's ridiculous that everyone is saying, 'Oh, she's bleaching her skin.' I'm a dark-skinned black woman, and I like who I am, I like the way I look.” The 23-time Grand Slam champion also stressed that this kind of practice is “just not my thing.”
However, Serena Williams said she doesn't pass judgment on those who choose to lighten their skin. “If others do it, it’s their choice, and I’m not criticizing. But to be clear, this is not something I do. So, can we end this?” she concluded firmly.
The athlete has always wanted to be honest about the treatments and body modifications she has carried out, as when she shared a video of herself on Instagram showing a radiofrequency treatment to firm up her belly after her pregnancies in a spa in Paris . “I am seeing progress, my skin is returning to normal and my self-confidence is returning. My body will never be the same again, but neither will I, because I have two incredible lights in my life,” she explained in the caption.
