The Marrakech International Film Festival paid, on November 30, 2024, a moving tribute to Sean Penn, an emblematic figure of American cinema, acclaimed actor and committed director. The ceremony, which was held at the Palais des Congrès, brought together personalities from the seventh art who came to salute the extraordinary career of this artist whose work oscillates between cinematic audacity and humanitarian commitment.

A multifaceted actor

Sean Penn has been heralded as “one of the most gifted artists of his generation.” The actor knew how to embody complex and tormented characters with intensity, forever marking American cinema. Revealed in Colors by Dennis Hopper and Outrages by Brian De Palma, he then offered remarkable performances in The Red Line by Terrence Malick and 21 grams by Alejandro González Iñárritu, which earned him an Oscar for best actor.

His unique talent allowed him to win the Best Actor award at the three biggest film festivals – , Venice and Berlin – a distinction shared only with Jack Lemmon. However, Sean Penn was not content with being a prolific actor: he also took the reins of directing with films like The Indian Runner or the cult Into the Wild, a masterpiece hailed by his friend the Italian actress, director and screenwriter Valeria Golino as “one of the rare films capable of changing a life.”

An artist committed on all fronts

The tribute not only highlighted Sean Penn’s artistic career, but also his unwavering humanitarian commitment. Heir to a family known for its courageous stands, he has often used his celebrity to serve just causes. He was present in New after Hurricane Katrina, in Haiti after the earthquake, and even in Ukraine. These initiatives bear witness to a man for whom art and action are inseparable.

In her speech, Valeria Golino praised her friend as a “unique humanist, always concerned about the struggles of the most vulnerable.” Looking back on their collaborations, she described Sean Penn as a filmmaker burning with authenticity, revealing the intimacy of anti-heroic figures with a disarming humanity.

A speech full of humility and passion

During the ceremony, Sean Penn spoke with emotion in front of a captivated audience: “I am incredibly lucky to be here, surrounded by magicians of the imagination. You are a source of inspiration for me.” He also wanted to thank HM King Mohammed VI, HRH Prince Moulay Rachid and the Moroccan people, saluting the cultural richness and diversity of talents present at the festival.

Taking advantage of this platform, the actor-director spoke about the challenges of today’s world, emphasizing the need to preserve freedom of expression and the plurality of ideas. For him, cinema can be a powerful tool to express the truths of the heart and the world. Through his talent, passion and commitment, Sean Penn continues to inspire generations of filmmakers and spectators around the world.
