Guess who’s back?

Eminem has announced the release date for his 12th studio album: Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce), which will be available on July 12.

The 51-year-old rapper made the announcement in true Slim Shady style, posting a shocking trailer on his social media accounts. The short film shows a woman giving birth to a demonic baby. The newborn doesn’t breathe at birth until a doctor smacks him on the butt to resuscitate him. When he opens his eyes, they are completely black. The baby then sprouts a long forked tongue and a pair of horns, while the audience in the room screams “Oh s**t.”

The video is accompanied by the caption: “OH SHIT!!! SLIM SHADY DEATH (COUP DE GRACE) 7/12!!!”

The death of Slim Shady (Eminem’s dark avatar for over twenty years) by a coup de grâce can be understood as the rapper’s desire to close a chapter of his career and move on.

Details of the album’s release date came just ahead of the release of the album’s second single, “Tobey”, which was announced for Tuesday, July 2. On June 28, 2024, Eminem released a teaser for Tobey, featuring Detroit rappers Big Sean and BabyTron. The short black-and-white clip shows the rapper wearing a Jason (Friday the 13th) mask and wielding a chainsaw, standing next to the artists, with an instrumental snippet. The music video is set to be released on July 5.

The title Tobey is thought to be a nod to Spiderman actor Tobey Maguire, as the rapper has been a huge Marvel fan for years and has referenced the superhero universe several times in his previous songs. In Tobey, he raps the following lyric: “Tobey Maguire got hit by a spider, but I see it was a goat.”

Houdini, the lead single from the album Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce), was released on May 31 and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Eminem’s highest-charting single in over a decade. The singer was criticized for appearing to mock Megan Thee Stallion, who was shot in the foot in 2020. Rapper Tory Lanez was convicted of shooting her. In the first verse, Eminem raps, “If I asked Megan Thee Stallion if she wanted to collab with me, would I really get a chance to do a feature?”

“Feat” is both short for “featuring,” the word used to describe musical guest appearances, and a homophone for the word “feet.”
