Not all major movie actresses have yet turned to the small screen, but Natalie Portman has. She plays the lead role in this Apple TV+ crime miniseries, which is set in the 1960s in the United States. Another terrible news story brought to the screen, since the story is inspired by the death in 1969 of a Baltimore barmaid, African-American Shirley Parker, an event recounted by novelist Laura Lippman in 2019. As for the synopsis, Maddie Schwartz (Natalie Portman) is a housewife who emancipates herself by leaving her husband and working for a newspaper. One day, she comes across a little-publicized case that becomes her obsession: the murder of an African-American woman named Cleo Sherwood (Moses Ingram, The Queen’s Gambit), found in a lake. A harrowing thriller that explores themes of gender, racism and justice.

After having shone in Mad Men et The Handmaid’s Tale: The Handmaid’s TaleElisabeth Moss is back on the small screen in this 6-episode spy series created by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders). The actress slips into the shoes of Imogen Salter, an MI6 agent specializing in cover-ups and secret identities. His mission? During their trip between Istanbul, Paris and London, the two women form a sort of alliance while trying to discover the secrets hidden by the other. Who are the bad guys, who are the good guys? If in the saga James Bond the distribution of roles is often obvious, this is not the case in The Veil where pretenses seem to reign supreme. The critics aren’t kind to this title, but let’s give it a chance!

The story immerses us in a bourgeois American suburb of the 60s, where we follow two neighboring mothers, Alice (Jessica Chastain) and Céline (Anne Hathaway). The two friends are very supportive of each other and their son is the same age. But behind their seemingly idyllic life lie dark sides. One day, Céline’s child dies after falling from a balcony, before the eyes of a helpless and distraught Alice. After the tragedy, the relationship between the two protagonists fades – just like the facade – in a distressing atmosphere, between guilt and paranoia. For Hitchcock fans!

For her first film, co-produced by Cate Blanchett, the Australian-Iranian director and screenwriter Noora Niasari chose to depict with sensitivity and modesty the mechanisms of domestic violence. If The thing addresses difficult themes, the feature film breathes a wind of hope as our heroines progress little by little towards freedom and rebirth. Synopsis-wise, we follow Shayda (played by the brilliant Zar Amir Ebrahimi), a young Iranian woman fleeing her tyrannical husband with her 6-year-old granddaughter, Mona. They find refuge in Australia in a reception center for women victims of violence, where mother and daughter discover infinite solidarity. A poignant story about the challenges of motherhood and the place of women in Iranian society.
