MUSIC – From the “ crowdsurfing » a bit unusual. It was not a singer or a musician that the spectators carried on their arms at the Glastonbury festival on Friday June 28, but an inflatable boat filled with mannequins representing migrants. Claimed by Banksy on Instagram two days later, the artistic performance took place during the concert of the Idles, a British rock group.

As you can see in our video above, It was in the middle of a song that the boat carrying mannequins decked out in life jackets was launched. All during a song that Banksy did not choose by chance because, in Danny Nedelkothe Idles rightly denounce the lack of compassion towards migrants. During their concert, the committed group also encouraged the crowd to sing ” Fuck the King “, before calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

If the spectators believed that the inflatable boat was part of the concert, the Idles explained the next day that they had not been informed, specifies the Guardian. It was only this Sunday, June 30, that Banksy posted a video of the crowdsurfing on his Instagram account, confirming his involvement. This is not the first time that the artist has infiltrated Glastonbury: in 2019, he notably designed a provocative jacket for the rapper Stormzy, in the colors of the Union Jack.

A performance ” unacceptable »

Under the video of Banksy’s latest stunt, many comments praised the artist’s political message, as well as his use of the crowd to represent the waters of the English Channel in which migrants die each year trying to reach the UK. However, some accused the performance of being in poor taste.

On Sky NewsHome Secretary James Cleverly notably described the performance as ” completely unacceptable ». « There are plenty of people out there joking and celebrating criminal actions that cost lives. “, he added. “ People are dying in the Mediterranean, in the English Channel, it’s not funny, it’s despicable. » To which the journalist Sky News the questioner replied: “ How do you know this isn’t a comment on your failure to deal with immigration? »

Immigration has indeed emerged as a major theme of the British electoral campaign in view of the legislative elections on July 4. Irregular migrants now risk being sent to Rwanda without the possibility of return, a very controversial measure that the government has not yet been able to apply.

Despite the risks, migrants are increasingly arriving by boat on British shores. On Tuesday 18 June alone, almost 900 migrants crossed the Channel, the highest number so far this year and an 18% increase on the same period last year.
