Speaking to Cyril Hanouna this Thursday, economist Marc Touati painted a particularly alarming portrait of the French economy. He predicts serious consequences if the public debt continues to grow further and calls for “a complete rethink of public spending” and “better redistribution”.

Marc Touati is formal: France is doing badly economically. On the microphone of Cyril Hanouna in We walk on the head this Thursday, the economist delivered a rather pessimistic observation. “In my 30 years of career, I think I have never been so worried about the future of the French economy,” he assures. Including after the various shocks that the country had to face. “We experienced September 11, the bankruptcy of Lehmann Brothers, the Coronavirus. But, each time, we had the means to restart the machine: a budgetary stimulus, an increase in public debt, printing money, etc. But there, we used everything,” he said.

And to warn: “If tomorrow we continue to increase the public deficit, we will have a very serious sanction. The interest rates that the French State pays on its debt are increasing. […] It will break consumption which is already not very good.” According to him, it is urgent to “completely rethink public spending, taxes and redistribute better”.
