Dandadan, considered the revival of Shonen, proves itself by dethroning the daddy of them all: Dragon Ball (Daima, eh, let’s calm down).

Taste Taste Taste
An explosive cocktail of supernatural spices: that’s what Dandadan offers us. This Japanese manga, which boldly mixes Japanese folklore and science fiction, has already attracted thousands of readers. The animated adaptation, directed by the talented Fuga Yamashiro, is a success: the graphics are breathtaking and the atmosphere is faithful to the original work.
Dandadan is the story of two high school students who are polar opposites: Momo, a rebel with flowery language, and Ken, a shy otaku. Their meeting, as improbable as it is explosive, will turn their lives upside down.
Momo, a fan of ghost stories, and Okarun, a die-hard science fiction fan, cannot agree on the existence of the paranormal. To put an end to their arguments, they challenge each other: each explore a place known to be haunted or infested with extraterrestrials. But what they will discover there goes far beyond their wildest imaginations.
The anime takes us into a whirlwind of genres: teenage romance, crazy horror, explosive action scenes and absurd situations as you wish. Momo, our strong-willed heroine, finds herself kidnapped by aliens with dubious intentions and acquires supernatural powers.
An adaptation to small onions
Fuga Yamashiro gives Dandadan stunning animation. The saturated color palettes and lighting effects create a unique visual atmosphere, oscillating between the psychedelic and the dark. The action scenes are brilliantly choreographed, while the more intimate moments are rendered with great sensitivity.
The character design, characterized by exaggerated features and caricatured expressions, reinforces the comic aspect of the series. The staging, for its part, is particularly careful. The director uses unusual cutting techniques, such as panel cutting, to create an animated cartoon effect. The stop-motion scenes add an extra dimension to the animation, accentuating the playful and experimental side. I can only recommend this banger from the 2020s!
Moreover, the Dandadan anime even managed to climb to third position in the TOP 10 with 3.2 million views, overtaking Dragon Ball Daima in tenth position with “only” 1.3 million views.
Dandadan is available on the SVOD Netflix platform!
