The 78-year-old music icon released the first part of her self-titled memoir on Tuesday, revealing details of what she calls her “loveless marriage” to her musical partner.
In her book, Cher recounts how she considered jumping from a Las Vegas hotel balcony to escape her husband in 1972, explaining that she felt “trapped” because he controlled every aspect of her life. “I was dizzy with loneliness. I saw how easy it would be to step over the edge and disappear,” she writes.
The If I Could Turn Back Time singer explained that she felt “defeated” that night and didn’t see any other way out.
“For a few minutes, I couldn’t imagine any other option. I did it five or six times, and each time I thought about (their child) Chaz, about my mom (Georgia), about my sister (Georganne), about everyone and how things like that can make people who admire me think this is a viable situation, and I was going back inside,” she adds.
Cher then had a revelation: “I don’t need to jump. I can just leave it.”
The Believe singer also wrote that Sonny was so jealous that he wouldn’t let her wear perfume and took complete control of her career and finances, adding that he wouldn’t let her have her own bank account. She revealed that Sonny once told her that he had “seriously thought about” killing her towards the end of their marriage.
Cher and Sonny were married unofficially in 1964 and officially in 1969. They then filed for divorce in 1974, and after a bitter custody battle over their only child, Chaz. The divorce was finalized in 1975.
