After the premiere in London, the film “Wicked” is heading to cinemas around the world, particularly in South Africa.
The beloved Broadway musical first premiered in 2003 starring Kristen Chenoweth and Idina Menzel as the Witches of Oz. Instantly becoming a cult classic, it was adapted for the big screen by director Jon M. Chu.
“The fact that the film is getting a lot of attention is really exciting because all of these people are so passionate about the film that they want to know more about it and they can’t wait to see it. And I’m really excited that we’re getting to this point in the process where people are going to be able to start watching this movie and understand why we love it so much and why we’re so excited about it, in such a crazy way. I sometimes feel embarrassed to say how great I think the movie is because I’m, you know, technically – I’m in it. So it’s a little awkward to say, “I think he’s really good.” But I can’t wait for the rest of the world to see it and feel what we feel, at least I hope so. “, said actor Ethan Slater.
Adapted from the bestselling Wizard of Oz spin-off novel, “Wicked” follows the friendship story of Elphaba, the Witch of the West, played by Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda the Good, played by Ariana Great.
Actor Jeff Goldblum was asked about singing live on set:
“I did it. I said I had to do it now. If I’ve never done it before, I better do it now. Because being around them, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, is more than ‘A’. They are super “A” ++++. So, you know, it’s exciting to try.”
Fans of the book, the musical, or fantasy in general are in for a magical experience with this highly anticipated film adaptation, directed by Jon M. Chu, known for visually stunning projects such as Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights.
“It’s a dream job. It’s a dream life to be able to make films on this scale, to work with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, to make a film that means so much to me, to so many people, and to put it on the giant screen with the Emerald City and Munchkin. I mean, it’s all a dream. So the fact that we also have a beautiful family to make this film for, I couldn’t ask for anything more. “, explained director Jon M. Chu.
The first of « Wicked » will take place on November 22 in South African cinemas.
