Donald Sutherland has died at the age of 88.

The Canadian actor, who starred in films such as “Hunger Games,” died after a long illness.

His son, actor Kiefer Sutherland, said on X: “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my father, Donald Sutherland. I personally think he is one of the most important actors in the history of cinema. He was never intimidated by any role, whether good, bad or difficult. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and you can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”

The actor found great success in the 1970s, when he played the role of a surgeon named “Hawkeye” Pierce on “M*A*S*H.”

He went on to become one of the most sought-after leading actors in cinema, starring in the horror film “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” and the National Lampoon comedy “American College.”

He also starred alongside Sean Connery in the comedy “The Great Attack on the Gold Train,” which proved to be a critical and commercial success.

He also starred opposite Keira Knightley in “Pride and Prejudice” in 2005.
