In Quebec as in the United States, several stars are choosing to close their X account (formerly Twitter) to protest against the election of Donald Trump and his affiliation with Elon Musk (CEO of X), preferring the new Bluesky platform.
In Hollywood
Very vocal before, during and after the American election, Jamie Lee Curtis left X with a bang immediately after Donald Trump’s victory. The 65-year-old actress shared a screenshot of her deactivated X page with her 6 million Instagram followers on Wednesday with the words: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change . The courage to change the things I can change. And the wisdom to know the difference.”

The X account managed by the singer and outspoken critic of Donald Trump, Bette Midler, was no longer online after his enemy was elected president of the United States for the second time. The 78-year-old actress had also criticized Elon Musk, owner of X since April 2022, on the platform.

The singer Lizzo just took the plunge. On Instagram, she wrote: “I hate the internet. Anyway, I joined Bluesky because we are leaving toxicity in 2024.”

Don Lemon, former CNN host, also abandoned Elon Musk’s platform. “I once believed it was a place for honest debate and discussion, transparency and freedom of expression, but now I feel it does not serve that purpose” , he confided.

The radio presenter Patrick Marsolais is for the moment more nuanced. “I don’t have (sic) still having said goodbye to X… but it bothers me… In the meantime, don’t hesitate to follow me on Bluesky.”

One million more subscribers
Since the American election, Bluesky has added one million new users to its initial 13 million subscribers. Because it seems that people are looking for alternatives to X, especially since Donald Trump confirmed that he had named Elon Musk to head a new government efficiency department.
In 2022, a large number of celebrities had also chosen to leave Twitter, which they considered toxic, in addition to relaying false information.
Among these was singer Elton John, who wrote: “All my life I have tried to use music to bring people together. Yet it saddens me to see how misinformation is now being used to divide our world. I have decided to no longer use Twitter, given their recent policy change which will allow misinformation to flourish unchecked.”
