the essential
Despite a lackluster tourist season, the Champollion museum – the Scriptures of the world has had a very satisfactory year in 2024, both in terms of attendance and the success of its exhibitions. There is no shortage of projects for the establishment in the midst of its ten-year review.
A few weeks before the end of the year, it is time to take stock at the Champollion museum, which welcomes an average of 40,000 people per year. The 2024 season ends on a very positive note. “We really had a lot of people at the museum. We are having a very good off-season with many groups present in Figeac. It must be said that the weather is on our side” rejoices Hélène Lacipière, elected delegate for culture and heritage . The curator of the city’s museums, Céline Ramio, does not hide her satisfaction by giving the first attendance figures: “we had a very good season with a slight increase in July-August compared to last year with 17,000 visitors “. A trend that is confirmed throughout the year, and again this fall. “We are seeing the effect of the Culture Pass. We are seeing an increase in school groups. Since September, we have recorded more than 8,000 visitors.” Behind the scenes an ambitious project to promote the museum, entry to which is free every first Sunday of the month (except July and August), is being considered to attract visitors from the entire region to Figeac by taking advantage of the trains on that day. at 1 €.
Great success of the year: the temporary exhibitions were a landmark. The first entitled “Script girls” was dedicated to women who use writing in contemporary art; the second highlighted the work of the graphic artist and typographer Pierre di Sciullo, author of the famous thousand-letter facade of the Figeac museum. The “Script girls” exhibition was partly relocated to the other side of the world, to a museum in South Korea. “We have a partnership with the Incheon Writing Museum, which is very interested in our exhibition. Part of the collections have been borrowed. The Champollion Museum is exported to South Korea. This is the first part of the partnership which will continue with a Korean component in Figeac” announces Céline Ramio who is working on this event planned for 2026 to mark the 140 years of cooperation between France and Korea.

New exhibitions and proofing campaign
In 2025, two new temporary exhibitions will be unveiled at the museum. In February, the “Verre à verve” exhibition will open to celebrate 200 years of braille. “This will be an opportunity for the museum to reveal all the work carried out around accessibility for all motor and sensory disabilities” indicates the curator. Next summer, Figeac will welcome the world-famous Iraqi artist and calligrapher, Hassan Massoudy, who is due to make a very large donation to the Lot museum.
Before the annual closure in January, the establishment switched to low season hours, with opening to the public in the afternoon. Céline Ramio and Stéphanie Lebreton, in charge of audiences and collections, took advantage of the morning to carry out the tedious proofing work. Mandatory every ten years, this complete and meticulous inventory of all objects allows us to examine one by one all the precious objects which make up the richness and originality of the Museum of the Scriptures of the World.
