Even before Akira Toriyama talks about disliking Vegeta, a Dragon Ball derivative product already seems to bring opprobrium to the character. Enough to fuel one of the major fan theories.
A cooking recipe sung by Vegeta
Considered the father of modern shônen, Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball manga enjoys almost unparalleled worldwide notoriety when it comes to talking about the medium. Notoriety generated by the multiple derivative products of all kinds produced by the rights holders. The animated adaptation and figurines for example, but also gacha or video games. Certain derivative products, more atypical and reserved for a more niche audience, do not go beyond the borders of Japan. However, they are sources of information, sometimes interesting, sometimes crazy. One of them is brought up to date by the user Treevax, at the beginning of the year, since he talks about a CD of the Dragon Ball Z soundtrack released in 1991. These are the voice actors of the characters who sing on the disc.
Treevax focuses on track n°4 where Ryo Horikawa, the Japanese voice of Vegeta, sings a cooking recipe around a Japanese omelette. He must keep the same voice tone as his character in the anime, which generates singing that is completely out of sync with the words.
Ridiculed in Battle of the Gods, Vegeta hated by the author of Dragon Ball?
Treevax even considers this piece to be the first humiliation of Vegeta’s character. A term of humiliation carefully chosen since it is said that Akira Toriyama does not like the character. A statement taken from one of his interviews recounted in Dragon Ball Daizenshuu 2 reported by the fan site Kanzenshuu :
Yes, I think I love Piccolo the most, ultimately. Of all the enemies, Demon King Piccolo is the one I like the most, and even after that, it’s Piccolo I like the most. I love Piccolo about as much as I love Goku. As for Vegeta, I don’t like him very much, but he was very useful to me.
Enough to fuel fan theories for decades around the supposed humiliations experienced by Vegeta. However, it should be remembered that the interview dates from 1995. A year in which Dragon Ball did not yet have the notoriety it has today and that, since then, his opinion has probably evolved. This is evidenced by Dragon Ball Extreme Battle Collection: Round 02 published in 2015 where Toriyama is asked about his favorite characters:
- Piccolo / Vegeta: A couple who never says anything unless they have to, and who have an air of distant superiority. Their composure no longer needs to be demonstrated.
- Krillin: Fought against powerful opponents, although he was always frightened. He is now Goku’s closest friend!
- Mr. Satan: Satan is a character overflowing with human goodness and weakness. He is loved all over the world.
Goku
- Goku: Toriyama-sense’s favorite character is of course Goku! He is a super warrior who is both strong and gentle!
A ranking which will probably not help to calm the frustration of Vegeta fans who will have even less reason to understand the absence of a quarter of an hour of glory for their favorite character.
