London-based artist Lakwena created the poster for the 59th Montreux Jazz Festival which will be held from July 4 to 19, 2025. This typographic work with psychedelic inspirations quotes the lyrics of the song Starsperformed by Nina Simone in Montreux in 1976.
Using text as the central element of its visual, Lakwena signs the first typographic poster in the history of the festival. The work is structured around five words, “all you see is glory”. This short and powerful message invites various interpretations, explains the Montreux Jazz Festival (MJF) on Tuesday in a press release.
This sentence is taken from the lyrics of the song Starscomposed by Janis Ian in 1974 and played by Nina Simone in Montreux in 1976 during an anthology performance. While researching the festival, Lakwena was immediately drawn to Nina Simone’s performance, which she describes as “so intimate, raw and authentic.”
The word “Glory” reflects the heritage of the festival, its legendary concerts, the beauty of its lake and its mountains. It is not devoid of melancholy, the song Stars dealing above all with the ephemeral nature of glory. It’s a concept that brings us back to a certain reality and which contrasts with our society’s obsession with celebrity,” describes the artist.
Optimistic and subversive universe
Lakwena, an artist of British and Ugandan origin, distinguishes himself by the use of bright colors and punchy texts, creating a universe that is both optimistic and subtly subversive. His works have been exhibited around the world in cities such as London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles and in institutions such as the Tate Modern, the Southbank Center and the Kunsthal in Rotterdam.
Since 1967, the MJF has given carte blanche to international artists to create its official poster. In 1982, Jean Tinguely left his indelible mark, which became such a recognizable logo. Keith Haring signed three variations in 1983, then in tandem with Andy Warhol in 1986. David Bowie took part in the game in 1995, as did Yoann Le Moine (Woodkid), Christian Marclay, Ignasi Monreal, JR and Rylsee more recently.
